As many of you know, I find the Mailbox magazine and many of it's other publications to be an invaluable resource. I found this cute craft in a Mailbox publication.
For the craft you will need:
construction paper/background
brown construction paper
large cotton balls
wiggle eyes
orange construction paper
shredded wheat
glue
scissors
Out of the brown construction paper have the children cut out a semi-circle. You can draw a pattern for them if you like. Glue the semi-circle nest onto another piece of paper.

Take two large cotton balls and spread them out a little, you want them to fluff up a bit. Then glue them in the nest.

The next step is to add some features to the little birds. Now for me wiggle eyes would be best, but I was out, so I used some black foam scraps I had. Then I had cut some triangles out of orange foam, these are for the beaks.

The final step is to let the children put glue all over the brown next. Take some shredded wheat and "shred" it. That's a bit redundant. I squished mine up, it breaks easily. Let the children sprinkle the shredded wheat all over the nest to give it some texture.

I was thinking if you don't have shredded wheat you could always use yarn, or go outside and find some small twigs, or even brown grass.

I love this idea. I can't wait to use it with my preschoolers.
