Groundhog Poems

I have some poems/fingerplays to share. I wanted to get them out today, since some people may be doing these activities tomorrow. Unfortunately, many of my things are at school. If I find more tomorrow I will add some new ones.

If Groundhog Day be fair and bright,
Winter will have another flight;
But if it is dark with clouds and rain,
Winter is gone and will not come again.

(Look familiar?)

This one is a little fingerplay you can add actions too:

Here's the groundhog,
big and round,
If he sees his shadow,
he'll go back in the ground.

This one is a little poem:

"Shy Little Groundhog"

A shy little groundhog left his bed
Hi ho-Hi ho-Hi ho.
It must be time for spring he said
Hi-ho-Hi ho-Hi ho.

He looked to the left, he looked to the right
The sky was clear, the sun was bright,
He saw his shadow and ran with fright
Hi ho-Hi ho-Hi ho.

Then back to his burrow he crept, he crept
Hi ho-Hi ho-Hi ho
And six more winter weeks he slept
Hi ho-Hi ho-Hi ho.

February 2, 2009--Have a couple more songs for you:

Me and My Shadow
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"

See the groundhog, see the groundhog
Turn around, turn around,
Looking for his shadow, looking for his shadow,
Run and hide, run and hide.

These songs are from, "More Piggyback Songs":

On Groundhog's Day
Sung to: "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

Do you see your shadow.
shadow, shadow?
Do you see your shadow?
On Groundhog's Day.

Yes, I see my shadow,
shadow, shadow,
Yes, I see my shadow
On Groundhog's Day.

I don't see my shadow,
shadow, shadow
I don't see my shadow
On Groundhog's Day.

Betty Ruth Baker

Mr. Groundhog
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"

Mr. Groundhog, Mr. Groundhog
Are you there? Are you there?
Will you see your shadow,
We all want to know
Groundhog Day, Groundhog Day.

Dr. Margery A. Kranyik
Hyde Park, MA

Little Groundhog
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"

Little Groundhog, Little Shadow
Where are you? Where are you?
Groundhog's Day is here
Spring will be her too
Wake up you
Wake up you.

Kristine Wagoner
Pacific, WA

See My Shadow
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"

See my shadow, see my shadow,
Move this way, move this way,
Ding things that I do, doing things that I do,
Follow me, follow me.

Saundra Winnett
Fort Worth, TX

That's all I got!
