Native American Crafts

Now that I have explained what our Pre-K class does during the month of November, I thought I would share with you some of the crafts that we do.

First, all the children make a "tom tom." They use this for one of the songs during the show. Also, our Native Americans enter the church playing these to their entrance song.

These are very easy to make. They are actually the same drums that are in the Strike Up the Band post. The only difference is how we decorate them.

The colors for these tom toms are more fall oriented. They are yellow, or orange, or red. The decorations steer more towards Native American markings. The one class will do stamping with different fall stamps and colors then decorating if they wish. The other class does their decorations with crayons, but the teacher usually talks about patterns. Not all the children do patterns, but she introduces it to them.

Another easy craft they all make is a necklace. Now these can be made with a variety of materials. Ours this year included beads, colored pasta, and beading elastic. The list of materials for this activity are endless though. One can use, Cheerios, Fruit Loops, cut straws, beads, pasta, colored or plain, anything that will string nicely.

For the necklace part the classes used beading elastic, but if you have some yarn on hand it works just as well. I usually wrap one end of the yarn with masking tape so that it will thread easier for the children.

These are two of our easier crafts. I have two more to share, but I don't want the post to look like a novel so I'll save those for another time.

Making a "tom tom" looks like a lot of fun! Might just need to steal that idea for my girls to do this month!! My 4 yr old will be creating a Native American vest with a brown grocery bag at Preschool. They decorate them with Native Amer. symbols. The "tom tom" will coordinate well. Thanks a bunch! Jen
